Summer is just around the corner and that means porch time in Sonoma County! There has been a recent revival of the porch. For years homes were built emphasizing a private backyard for outside leisure time. This is still a prized feature of any home; however, there has been a renewed interest in connecting with our neighbors and strengthening community bonds. Bringing ourselves out to the porch where neighbors can stop by and chat is an easy way to work toward those goals. Porches were a vital part of homes gone by. They are now, if not vital, truly desirable.
In homes where porches were not part of the original architecture, we are starting to see homeowners add them. And where porches were once neglected entries with the occasional potted plant and welcome mat, we are starting to see elaborate patio furniture, outdoor rugs and special lighting. But having a nice porch doesn’t have to be expensive. A couple of second hand chairs with fresh pillows, a discarded table and a rag rug can go along way.
Porches are not only a desirable place to spend time, but if you are considering selling your home, they are a good place to invest. Porches are part of the ever important first impression of a house. A welcoming porch tells your prospective buyer “this is home.”
